Sankheda Lacquer Work – Done Using Paint and Lacquer on Wood Craft

Gujarat, an Indian state, is famous for its amazingly decorated wood crafts. In this state, many artists have been in the profession of wood carving for several years. The project is carved from the teak wood and is painted with the colors mentioned above. After that, it is kept on the lathe over burning coals. With the rotation of the lathe and heat of the coals, there remains a coat of lacquer. After that, the final product is smoothed by using leaves of Kewda tree.

According to a wooden handicraft supplier, the artisans involved in Sankheda lacquer work belong to the Kharadi community lived in the village of the same name. About one hundred and fifty years ago, people of this community were in huge trouble. They requested a holy man to show them a path to come out of their misery. He taught them to improve their carpentry skills. Thus, Sankheda lacquer work originated. In old time, they only catered their traditional customers, but the modern artists are producing these to fulfill the demands of urban people.
