Differnet Aspects of Indian Handicrafts Industry

India is a great country with traditional diversification and a rich culture resulting in a large range of Indian handicrafts. These handicrafts are quite famous for their attractive and unique designs. A few famous products of this industry include hand printed textiles, metalware, bamboo products, woodware, shawls, jute products, zari products, leather products, marble sculpture marble painting, embroidered good, jewelry, etc. With the number of states and different geographical location, there are many different materials available in different places of the country, which adds to the range of handicrafts in India. Thus, different states are famous for different handicraft products in India, for example:



  • Rajasthan is quite well known for its exclusive leather products, antique furniture and traditional jewelry.
  • Karnataka is famous for fine silk, rose wood and sandal figures. 
  • Madhya Pradesh is popular for producing most of the jute products like jute floor mats, jute bags, jute carpets, jute wall dressings, jute hammocks, jute wall covers, etc. 
  • Gujarat is the biggest producer of zari products and hand painted textiles.
  • Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh are well known for wood carvings, shawls, and carpet weaving.


Indian economy is highly dependent on these products and their manufacturers as there is a huge demand of such products in India as well as in abroad. This sector is known to be the second biggest employment sector in India after agriculture as it offers employment to a big number of artisans, handicraft shopkeepers and other people. This industry helps India to earn more and more foreign exchange due to the demand of these products in abroad, which helps in raising the export worth of the country. USA, UK, Germany, China, France and Italy are some of the key buyers of these products and contribute greatly to the Indian economy by buying these products.
